The Land of The Giants ride is a unique challenge to take part in. For the first time, it will be hosted at Mashatu Game Reserve and is an incredible opportunity to see first-hand the projects and work that the Tuli Conservation Trust funds, to protect this pristine wilderness and the valuable role that ecotourism can play in protecting it.
Organized by Mashatu Game Reserve for the Tuli Conservation Trust (TCT), this event aims to raise awareness and funds for vital conservation efforts in the region. Conservationist and philanthropist Stephen Lansdown, alongside 50 other riders, will embark on this extraordinary journey through the African bush. Their mission: to raise BWP 500 000 in support of conservation initiatives vital for preserving Botswana’s natural heritage.
The decision to host the “Land of the Giants” ride at Mashatu Game Reserve underscores its significance as a sanctuary for wildlife and a hub for conservation efforts, showcasing the importance of ecotourism in preserving pristine wilderness areas.
Stephen Lansdown, majority owner of Mashatu Game Reserve, reflecting on Botswana’s significance, remarked, “Our involvement in Africa stretches back almost twenty years after we initially visited South Africa and then bought a share in a lodge in Botswana, thinking we would literally visit a couple of times a year. Quickly that changed as we recognised how privileged we were to be in that environment and wanted to spend more time there.”
“That’s why this year we are hosting the Land of The Giants ride at Mashatu. Game reserves like Mashatu are critical as they serve as safe havens for wild animals, where they can roam free from the threat of poaching or hunting. Africa talks about sustainable tourism but, in my view, the industry doesn’t give enough back into the local communities, it needs to give more. Our ambition is to make a shining example of how you can run a reserve, protect the animals, the habitat, and the community around it. The work that Tuli Conservation Trust does, exemplifies that. You cannot have conservation without having the support of the community. Through education and empowerment, the local community will not only be able to protect this pristine wilderness but also share fairly in its benefits.”
The Tuli 24 Land of the Giants Ride will unite over 50 riders from diverse backgrounds, pedalling through the rugged terrain of the Mashatu Game Reserve, an integral part of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve (NOTUGRE). This four-day odyssey promises participants an immersive experience amidst untamed wilderness, spanning approximately 120 kilometres of desert trails.
In addition to the exhilarating cycling expedition, participants will engage with TCT’s Community Liaison Officer, gaining insights into local community projects sustained by TCT’s initiatives. They will also meet with anti-poaching teams, a testament to TCT’s unwavering commitment to wildlife protection.
