Unique Qualities of Mashatu:
Let’s dive into some of the unique qualities of Mashatu, and what you can expect as we embark on this new chapter of reintroducing our beautiful Reserve!
Wildlife Diversity:
With the new year, we’d like to take this opportunity to celebrate Mashatu’s uniqueness. We’re proud that Mashatu is home to the “Big Seven Land Based Giants,” showcasing the awe-inspiring diversity of the region’s wildlife, including: the majestic elephant – the largest land mammal, the giraffe – world’s tallest mammal; the eland – world’s largest antelope; the ostrich – world’s largest bird; the kori bustard – world’s heaviest flying bird and finally the lion – king of the beasts. Each species finds its home within our expansive reserve.
Free To Roam
Mashatu offers an unparalleled experience of openness. The vast landscapes and untamed wilderness provide a sense of peace that allows wildlife to roam freely. This unrestricted movement is a testament to the true essence of nature, and visitors will have exciting moments of witnessing it in action. The ‘Land of Giants’, takes its name from the Nyala berry tree (Xanthrocercis zambesiaca) where the elephants roam its terrain.
Community and Conservation
The sense of community within Mashatu extends beyond its human visitors. It’s a place where wildlife thrives, and the principles of conservation and preservation are a part of its very fabric. Guests take part in conservation efforts and contribute to the well-being of this unique ecosystem simply by visiting us. When you visit Mashatu Game Reserve, your conservation levy plays a vital role in supporting a number of initiatives, including antipoaching and upliftment of the communities in the surrounding areas. In addition, with the most recent updates, a portion of the levy will contribute towards the Mashatu Health Care Fund, which subsidises emergency health care for our employees that don’t have medical aid.
Progression and Prosperity
Mashatu is a symbol of progression and prosperity in the realm of eco-tourism. The sustainable practices implemented here ensure the longevity of this unique destination while creating economic opportunities for local communities. To name a few, Mashatu provides all guests with re-usable water bottles to reduce plastic waste; solar energy is made use of throughout the camps and non-motorized activities are offered such as cycling, walking, horse riding and photographic hides.
Upliftment and Opportunity
Visiting Mashatu is not just about taking in its natural wonders; it’s also an opportunity for upliftment. The local communities benefit from the tourism industry, improving their quality of life and creating a harmonious coexistence with the wilderness. Mashatu supports Children in the Wilderness (CITW) – a life skills and environmental education program focusing on children living in villages near the reserve. One of the efforts is known as Pack for a Purpose organisation, where guests can fill the empty space in their suitcases with much needed supplies for the children when visiting Mashatu. The supplies are then used for the CITW Wilderness programs and eco-clubs in the surrounding communities.
Conservation Mission:
Under our recent ownership, Mashatu remains steadfast in its mission to preserve and protect this thriving ecosystem. Our website relaunch is a testament to our commitment to showcase the splendor of the natural world while promoting sustainable tourism practices. We aim to strike a delicate balance between nature, community, and your authentic African safari experience.
Mashatu transcends the boundaries of a conventional safari; it’s an immersion into the untamed beauty of nature, an opportunity to witness the giants in their natural habitat, and a chance to be part of a collective effort to preserve a magnificent ecosystem. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or embarking on your first safari, Mashatu promises an extraordinary journey, inviting you to connect with nature in its purest form.
