Mashatu is home to no less than seven of Africa’s “giants” – the African elephant, the lion, giraffe, the baobab tree, the eland, ostrich and the kori bustard. It is therefore fitting that these giants have a massive habitat – 42 000 hectares of pristine game land set aside as a refuge for these creatures.

The predators listed here are by no means all the predators which occur at Mashatu but these can be classified as the key predators seen on the reserve almost daily:
Mashatu has a variety of fascinating mammals, reptiles, and primates. Bovidae species like eland and kudu can be found, as well as carnivores from the Canidae family like hyenas. You can also spot primates such as baboons and vervet monkeys, and equidae species like zebras, wildebeests, and horses. Some notable reptiles include the boomslang and python snakes, as well as the Nile crocodile, leopard tortoise, and chameleon.
Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana is a bird watcher’s paradise, home to more than 350 species of birds. The diverse habitats in the reserve support a wide range of bird families. The raptors are the most impressive group, and the reserve boasts over 50 species of these remarkable birds. The eagles include the tawny, martial, fish, and African hawk eagles. The owls that can be found in Mashatu are the African scops owl, spotted eagle owl, and the Pel’s fishing owl. Other common bird families include the weavers, kingfishers, hornbills, and rollers. The reserve is also a great place to see large birds such as the ostrich, ground hornbill, and kori bustard. These fascinating birds are just a few of the species you can expect to see on a birding adventure in Mashatu.
Mashatu Game Reserve boasts a diverse range of flora, including iconic trees like the Mashatu and Nyala. The Baobab, Mopane, and Fig trees are also present, creating an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers to experience Africa’s beauty and diversity. These trees play a crucial role in supporting Mashatu’s wildlife.
