Honouring the Women of Mashatu

August 29, 2025

As Women’s Month draws to a close, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the incredible women who shape Mashatu Game Reserve and the communities around us. Whilst this month may be “Women’s Month” our recognition and appreciation extends far beyond the month of August.

From the surrounding villages of Bobirwa to the heart of the reserve, women are integral to Mashatu’s story. Their talent, leadership, and creativity uplift not only our reserve but the lives of countless families and communities in the surrounding villages in the north-eastern corner of Botswana.

Did you know?

  • 98% of Mashatu employees are Botswana Citizens, of which 78% are from the Bobirwa District (including the six villages closest to the reserve).
  • Eighty-two employees hold senior management positions, of which 59% are women.
  • Mashatu supports basket weaving groups in Bobirwa through the purchase of their woven products, supplied and sold in Mashatu’s curio shops. 70% of all sales go back to the women’s groups.
  • Mashatu supports local women-led seamstresses from the Mothlabaneng village, through the procurement of uniforms, cushion covers and more.
  • Mashatu has an agreement with a female fine jewellery supplier — with items locally designed and manufactured in the Bobirwa District and supplied to Euphorbia Mashatu for décor and curio shop displays.
  • Within Bobirwa, Mashatu proudly supports the traditional dance and choir group, comprising talented female dancers and singers who are contracted in for special occasions at Mashatu.

These aren’t merely initiatives for Women’s Month. They are everyday commitments, ensuring empowerment, opportunity, and pride for the women of Botswana. Every safari booked, every curio item purchased, and every visit to Mashatu directly contributes to creating pathways for women to flourish — in conservation, in business, and in their communities.
