Mashatu Game Reserve is known as “The Land of the Giants” and is home to no less than seven of Africa’s giants. These include:
African Elephant – The largest land mammal
Lion – The largest cat in Africa
Eland – The second largest antelope
Giraffe – The tallest animal in the world
Ostrich – The largest bird in the world
Kori Bustard – The heaviest flying bird in the world
Baobab Tree – The most iconic tree in Africa
These giants alone make Mashatu well worth a visit, but there is an 8th and vitally important giant that rarely gets mentioned, essential to the running of our unique reserve and to creating lasting memories for our guests – Our 235 employees!
As a guest, at one of our lodges, you will most likely only meet the front of house staff that work at our camps, but behind them is a full team of dedicated support staff taking care of maintenance, logistics, vehicles, roads and conservation. Without this team we would not be able to offer the friendly hospitality that is synonymous with Mashatu.
Of our 235 total employees… 97% are Motswana, of which 88% are from our local district of Bobirwa. 33 employees are in senior management positions and of this … 58% are woman. Statistics we are exceptionally proud of. PULA!
Today we celebrate all 235 giants that are the heartbeat of Mashatu Game Reserve, including our inspiring and hardworking team of women … the matriarchs of Mashatu.
