Mashatu has recently had the very exciting arrival of twin elephant calves. The calves’ where first spotted at our newly established Valley Hide which is situated in Elephant Valley, which has been a migratory route for the elephants of Mashatu for many years. The twins approached the hide with their mom in high spirits and continued to roll around in the mud and water, cooling off nicely before heading off into the Mopane. The twins have since been spotted in the valley at the hide on numerous occasions.
Twin births within elephants are extremely uncommon, occurring less than 1% of the time. The siblings have created an exciting hype between Mashatu guests and guides alike, and will most certainly be a sighting to look out for when visiting Mashatu in the months to follow.
Thank you to Janet Kleyn for sharing her images of the twins having fun in the waterhole at the Valley Hide.
